On 2nd May 2010 the Pope Benedict XVI celebrated the Mass in San Carlo Square in Turin, Italy, for the ostension of the Holy Shroud, which for tradition wrapped up Christ’s body after his crucifixion. In spite of the rain, at times very heavy, 50,000 people took part in the event: 25,000 believers directly in the square, and the second half scattered in the centre of the city before one of the 6 maxi screens placed all around.
The stage where the Sovereign Pontiff said the Mass was built entirely with LITEC trusses. The 10x10m central part was made in the QL52A, while the two 13x6m side wings used for the choir were set up in Libera FL76 and Varitower 40 lifters.
The design and fitting out were taken care by the Torinese company Pieffe, specialized in designing and producing set-ups for any type of event. Pieffe is a skilled and reliable partner that ensures an exclusive and high-quality product fully compliant with the most severe safety standards offering efficient services. Their flexibility and ability to meet the most demanding expectations let them achieve a prominent position in the field.
For this project Pieffe succeeded in finding out-of-the ordinary solutions. The Vatican asked for a baldachin-like structure, very light, not invasive and hanging in the air. Pieffe made a cantilever roof balanced with adequate ballast, and integrated the stage into the architectural context of the square. The stage found its perfect place in the surrounding architecture respecting the dimensions of the colonnade and keeping the two rear churches on the background.
